UPDATE Oct 22nd 2009,
Gord Medwid : nominated and elected by the executive committee and appointed by President Murray Nychyporuk.
- Gord was appointed to fill the vacancy left by Richard Sanche.
Gord Medwid has been an HSE representative for about 5 years and was appointed to the role of Worker safety Representative since June of 2006. Prior to his safety and health commitments, he was a union steward for over 15 years. Gord has been employed with Inco since October of 1987 which gives him 22 years of service with the company. Over half of that time has been spent representing the workers in the smelter.
During his time as a union steward he gained a lot of knowledge of the collective agreement and had learned that safety and health was a huge part of that agreement. His work, dedication and determination as a steward earned him the respect of many in the department he still currently works in. It even earned him the nickname "The Hammer", a moniker that he still carries. Gord has represented many workers and helped resolve many grievances on their behalf in that time.
After over 15 years of representing his coworkers on the conflict resolution aspect for the union, he also stepped forward to become a health and safety representative in 2004. This changed many things for him in regards to the significance placed by the company on the health and safety issues compared to conflict resolution. It also enabled him to represent his coworkers in an expanded role.
During the 2006 union executive elections, there was significant shift in the union, which brought with it the opportunity of becoming the Worker Safety Representative and co-chair of the JHSE committee in the smelter. Gord accepted the position, and has since enthusiastically worked with his committee members and the smelters management team to make some significant changes in that time.
Gord has been involved in a number of committees along with the smelter safety and health committee. He currently sits on the Grievance committee, and has been appointed to the Environmental steering committee for the division.
Gord has always strived to improve work conditions and relationships amongst everyone he has contact with and will continue with the effort of making the workplace as safe, healthy, and environmentally friendly as possible. His goal is also to ensure that the workers have solid union representation and is proud to be a representative for them.
