Water, pot holes and changing lanes. Be aware of your surroundings and don't take for granted things are what they seem.
Are things getting better or worse? The other day, I had a conversation with a worker who is pissed about the Company and rightfully so. The conversation was about where we were yester year and where we are headed. We talked about the "Ole' Mother Inco," which we are far from. How things used to be. How it was fun coming to work. I can honestly say if I didn't have the time invested "25+ years", I would be gone in a heart beat. I think it is terrible to see our community, at least through my eyes, in the shape it is in. I think it is terrible people cannot look and feel confident that they work for Vale Inco. Remember, I am a "Thompson Boy," not some transplant or transient. My feet are embedded, my blood runs with pride because I am from Thompson! But, I hate being in the place we are in!
Are things better or worse at work… debatable and could be fighting words. I guess it depends on what side of the fence you are on and what you can say. I see the uncertainty, the stress, the backstabbing and the suspicion. I see how workers are treated unfairly. I grew up knowing we are a mining town, here today, gone tomorrow. I also grew up knowing we had a hand in or worked together, with the company, trying to secure a sustainable future here in Tombstone! Not now! We are only told, directed and dictated to! Has anybody heard any conversations other than being scewed by bonuses, about changing pensions, etc ? I haven't, only about being screwed by bonuses, about changing pensions, etc. Here's the kicker, talk to any staff employee and he/she feels the same. (Maybe, less six.) - This place sucks!!
On a positive note and maybe because I am bias, is the subject of Safety! When a worker told me, in his opinion, safety is worse now than it used to be, I call BS!! I am very superstitious and hate talking about numbers, but, honestly, we are not hurting workers like in years gone past. In years past, when men were men and the Leafs sucked (They still do), the small bumps; bruises and cuts would not get reported. We worked in an environment where we expected a fatality every year. So, I will argue, safety has gotten better! Ten, twenty years ago, nobody told me to refuse unsafe work! I believe it has been awareness, which has helped us get there. Remember to ask yourself the five questions. Remember not to take short cuts. Remember to push back. Remember your rights. Remember your safety is still in your hands and it is the one thing they can't take away!!!
