King Miner Day 2009 was a great success for Steelworkers and the community. Shown below are some of the pictures taken during this years King Miner Day event.
By Ron Brown, Chair:
We were pleased to have had 21 contestants, including some of the rookies from last year. We had 6 rookies enter this year which is also a strong indication that we are still attracting new contestants. We were also very fortunate to have had great weather this year.
Thank you to each of the 2009 contestants for your participation. As you know, this contest involves hard work, honed skills and endurance to complete all eleven events.
Thank you to Gord Medwid for tallying the scores to come up with our final results and to all the judges and scorekeepers for your continued support.
A special thank you to Vale Inco, the City of Thompson, Nickel Days Corporation, our major sponsers and many businesses, both locally and out of town, who have supported and continue to support our contest through advertising in the National King Miner Contest Rule Book.
Regrettably something was missing from the view of the National King Miner contest site this year and that was the Kng Mner statue. The statue has overlooked the site since the early 1980's. However, it had to be taken down and sent out for some much needed repairs. Once the statue returns, it will be moved to a new location where it will once again remind us of why the City of Thompson became what it is today.
This year the honorary King Miner was Paul Koblun, who rode in a Chevrolet Corvette provided by Randy Radesic. The Honorary Driller was Mary Morris, who rode in a Mazda Miata provided by Dwayne Able. Mary was the first retired female worker to be honoured with this title and she was very pleased to have been given the privilage.
Once again, Thank you to all of those that helped this event be the success it was, and we look forward to your continued support. |
