 Monday, April 28, is a Day of Mourning dedicated to remembering workers who have been killed or injured on the job and to renew the commitment to making workplaces safer for everyone. Last year, 2007, over 800 workers died from workplace injury and illness across Canada. Forty of those fatalities occurred in Manitoba. Their names are listed at the end of this article.

As it has done in past years, Local 6166 held a Memorial Service to mark the occasion. The event included dignitaries to speak. It began at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 28, in Steel Center Located at 19 Elizabeth Drive.
 
Since 1984, 19,805 workers in Canada have been killed on the job and over 18 million have been injured. There have been almost 6,000 deaths and over a million injuries since 2000. Certain industries have particularly poor safety records with manufacturing and construction continuing to top the list.
