Overview and Safe Production
The United Steelworkers believe that their members health, safety and work environment is paramount to the worker. It is also a cornerstone to our collective agreement and is given a considerable amount of focus during the negotiation process.

Local 6166 is unique in that it has bargained for 9 full time worker safety representatives to overlook the health safety and working environment for all of the members working for Vale Inco.

The full time worker safety reps were first negotiated in the 1993 collective bargaining agreement and started with 3 worker safety reps. One rep for surface operations, one rep for underground, and the other for miscellanious. In 2002 there were more positions added bringing the total to 7. During the 2005 negotiations, there was another position added.

In 2008, Local 6166 and Vale Inco made an agreement to add one more worker rep to oversee the T-3 mine area that was previously included with T-1 mine as a whole The position was negotiated into the collective agreement in September 2008.

Each of these worker reps are the co-chairs of their committee's in each of their assigned departments in the plant. The division has a total of 67 members throughout the Manitoba operations which includes full time members and alternate members on the departmental HSE committees.

The unions divisional committee is lead by the divisional co-chair, Murray Pappin.

The USW 6166 Divisional drive to ensure the safety health and environment of all workers at Vale INCO has become a cooperative effort between USW 6166 and Vale Inco, and is called safe production which is in essence the legally required safety program. It is a philosophy and program designed to recognize risk and to manage it to maintain the safe production of nickel with the goal of zero harm to the worker.
