Murray is a 3rd Generation Inco employee. In 1980, he hired on with Inco Ltd. at the Copper Refinery in Sudbury. He worked there until March of 1982, when he was laid off. After becoming aware the Manitoba Division was hiring, he applied and was subsequently hired in April 1982, along with about 35 other people affected by the same Lay Off.
Murray worked in the Smelter for a short time as an Operations Labourer before transferring to T-1 Mine. He spent most of his mining days in the 3,600-4,000 levels of the Mine.
Murray returned to the Smelter in the mid 80's. In 1988, he began an Industrial Mechanic Apprenticeship. From there, Murray spent from 1991 until 1999 in the Smelter Maintenance Department.
In 1996, he became active as a Steward and a Health & Safety Committee member in the Smelter. Shortly after, Murray was appointed Union Co-Chair of the Health, Safety and Environment Committee in the Smelter. In 1999, he became an Executive member of USW, Local 6166. Murray was appointed as Alternate Worker Safety Rep in 2000.
In 2001, Murray became the Union contact in the Environment & Health Department, after issues became known to the Union regarding sampling conflicts. In 2002, this became a half time role, partnered with the Worker Safety Representative position for the Warehouse.
In 2005, Murray was appointed Worker Safety Representative in the Smelter. Following the Local 6166 Executive Committee Election in 2006, Murray was appointed Divisional Health, Safety and Environment Co-Chair, as a direct result of the former co-chair becoming elected President of USW Local 6166.
Murray has experience in many areas of the Division and he understands the challenges we face with respect to health and safety. He has also taken University courses in Environmental Sciences.
Married with 1 child, Murray enjoys sports, music and carpentry, but most of all - family time. With his own personal experience and family Inco history handed down to him, Murray's first priority is protecting the members of USW, Local 6166
