The United Steelworkers Local 6166 Executive Committee and members invite you to explore our site. The site is here to provide information to 6166 members and the public about who we are and what we do.
United Steelworkers Local 6166 represents over 1400 members that work in various local area businesses in the city of Thompson Manitoba. Over 1200 of these members work at Vale (formerly known as Vale Inco.) nickel mining complex in the community.
Local 6166 has a proud history of strong collective agreements which benefit our members in all areas and we are consistantly considered leaders when addressing health safety and environmental issues. The Steelworkers are also ensuring job security for their members and helping to provide them with a higher standard of living, which benefits their families and the community.
USW Local 6166 has also been an integral part of the community of Thompson, Manitoba in which the Local is situated. The Local hosts the Annual International King Miner Contest, which draws miners from all over and is held during the city of Thompson's Nickel Days Festival. We are also hosts to the Annual Labour Day festivities in the community, as well as the National Day of Mourning, in recognition of workers who have been injured or killed on the job.
Local 6166 is also active in the Safe Workers Of Tomorrow program, also known as SWOT. SAFE Workers of Tomorrow provides information to create awareness for a safe and healthy workplace in Manitoba. The Local participates in this activity in our high school, as well as in the surrounding northern communities schools prior to students entering the work force.
The USW is a dynamic and diverse union of 1.2million working and retired members throughout the United States and Canada working together to improve jobs, our workplaces and provide a better future for our families and society as a whole.
The USW has grown strong through organizing and mergers and is now the largest industrial union in North America, representing workers in almost every sector of the economy: from metals and mining and manufacturing to health care and other services.
